Max Biaggi win Race 1 WSBK in Circuit Monza

Max BiaggiMax Biaggi won Race 1 and his third World Superbike race of the season at the Italian circuit of Monza fending off with his Aprilia RSV4 Factory a challenging Brit pack lead by Sterilgarda Yamaha’s James Toseland, Cal Crutchlow and Suzuki Alstare’s Leon Haslam.
The Aprilia Alitalia rider was considered the man to beat today and the Roman Emperor knew it. Taking off first on the grid and getting the holeshot into the modified chicane, Biaggi led the field from almost start to finish and was passed only once by Leon Haslam in the early laps, but was able to control the race to the chequered flag finishing ahead of James Toseland by 0.247s.
James Toseland managed to keep Cal Crutchlow from taking second when Crutchlow attempted a slipstream pass across the line finishing behind his team mate by mere 0.05s. Leon Haslam took fourth and still leads the championship by eight points heading into race 2.
Leon Camier, started in 13th ended up in a lonely fifth finishing four seconds behind the leaders. Ruben Xaus had an excellent performance at Monza not only beating his team mate Troy Corser, but beating across the line Michel Fabrizio. Eighth spot went to Corser.
Tom Sykes in ninth took the first top ten finish for Kawasaki but was five seconds from BMW’s Troy Corser while Sylvain Guintoli rounded out the top ten after passing Noriyuki Haga on the final lap.
Assen’s double winner Jonathan Rea found himself down in 11th place after a bad start and started cutting a swathe across the field running up to fifth and looked like he could end up on the podium until his front folded at the Parabolica sending him down and his Honda flying over the tire barriers. Rea got up unhurt, searching for his bike and unable to find where it landed.
Yoshimura Suzuki’s Daisaku Sakai also crashed out with a scary high side at the Ascari turn, leaving the Japanese rider with an injured shoulder.
